Maryland's My-Hanh Lac will be one of the top players gunning for a chance to go to the World Championships This weekend, many of the best female players from across the East Coast will head to KB Billiards in Elkridge, MD for the J. Pechauer Northeast Women’s Tour , where they will compete to earn a spot in the 2010 Women’s World 9-Ball Championships.

Manny Chau Claims the NJ State 8-ball Championships at AC Billiards

Manny Chau (1st), AC Billiards manager Gary Serafine, & Josh Brothers (2nd) The 2nd annual New Jersey State 8-ball Championships , sponsored by Mezz Cues , took place at Atlantic City Billiard Club on Saturday, July 17th & Sunday, July 18th.  A strong field of thirty-three players came competed in this event, including Manny Chau , Josh Brothers , Rob Hart , Matt Krah , Jose Cruz , Joey Testa , Randy Schwage r, Adam Kielar , and Bruce Nagle . Leading the top half of the bracket, we saw Manny Chau tak wins over Ed Robson 7-0, Kevin Guimond 7-5, Brent Boemmels 7-0, and Josh Brothers 7-5.  Charching through the bottom half of the bracket was Forty with wins over Chris Ruggerio 7-4, Bruce Nagle 7-5, Rob Metz 7-3, and Jose Cruz 7-4. Playing for the hot seat were the final two undefeated players, Forty and Manny Chau.  This turned out to be a great battle, with Manny Chau pulling away late to win the match 7-5, sending Forty to the one-loss side

Amsterdam Billiards Hosts a New Weekly Straight Pool Tournament

Danny Barouty will be directing Amsterdam's new weekly 14.1 event (Photo by Charles Eames) This Saturday, July 17, Amsterdam Billiard Club , New York’s lower east side pool hot spot will be launching a new weekly straight pool mini tournament.  Amsterdam, which is known for its 14.1 leagues held twice weekly, is the go-to place in New york city for top competition in this classic game, and will now provide a new outlet for straight pool fanatics. The tournament, hosted by Amsterdam’s 14.1 league director and living legend Danny Barouty , will be single-elimination and will feature two division weekly, limited to eight players each.

Even though there has been some of criticism leveled at the organization of this event, from there being no live stream of the matches, to the main beef, that of the playing conditions resulting in mucho balls being made on the break, and the buckets that were fitted around the table in place of the normal pockets. However, I have to say that the old adage of “the best man won” still holds true no matter what the conditions are.

This series, presented by  Poison Billiards and  Amsterdam Billiards , follows the ladies of team “Kiss of Death” throughout the weeks leading up to the BCAPL National 8-ball Championships, where they compete in the Masters Team Division for the first time, after going undefeated in the Women’s Open Championship in 2009 in a field of 143 teams. In this episode, team Kiss of Death competes in the Masters Division for the first time in Las Vegas in the 34th Annual BCAPL 8-ball Championships . Team Captain Gail Glazebrook went through the field of 402 Women to capture the Women’s Open 8-Ball Championships earlier in the event, and the team looked to build on that success.  KOD also sweat the US Open 10-Ball Championships which ran in conjunction with the BCAPL team event

The WPBA Finds Value in Old and New as it Announces the 2010 Board Members

WPBA pro Cristina de la Garza is one of the newly-announced board members With the WPBA (Women’s Professional Billiards Association) US Open only a few short weeks away, running from July 28 – Aug 1, 2010 at the Riverwind Casino in Norman, OK, the tour’s players are hard at work preparing for the biggest event of the year.  As the WPBA is undergoing some transitional changes in 2010, this will only be the second WPBA event of the year that the WPBA pro players will be competing in… making the US Open a major opportunity for the players to make a statement.
